Why do you ask for a urine sample at my blood pressure visits?

+ FAQs
There are several ways we like to keep track of your blood pressure and its affects:
1. What are your usual blood pressure numbers (usually regular home monitoring is best)
2. Is your medication working properly to keep your blood pressures in a normal range?
3. Are you experiencing any symptoms related to elevated blood pressure?
4. How is/is your blood pressure affecting your kidneys?

#4 Answer: The urine sample is used to test for proteins. Protein can be spilled into the urine when blood pressures have been out of control for a while, and can indicate early kidney damage and disease. We check the ratio of protein to creatinine annually, and can follow any trends in kidney function decline using this simple test.
